Recording the impact of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

In Greater Manchester five museums worked in partnership with young people to produce new exhibitions on the theme of sport. The participants were Gallery Oldham, Tameside Museums, Salford Museums, Stockport Heritage Services & Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust. All have worked with young people to select images and objects for their exhibitions. The Our Sporting Life exhibition will tour to five Greater Manchester museums with specific content generated for each venue.

For The People’s Record photographers Liz Lock and Mishka Henner recorded meetings and activities with the young people in all five boroughs.

Most importantly the project is helping to build sustainable relationships between the partner museums and young people. Youth Panels have been established at Wigan, Salford and Tameside as part of this project and the photographers worked with an existing Youth Panel at Stockport. In Oldham relationships between Gallery Oldham, a local sports academy, Oldham Athletic and Oldham College have all been deepened by this work.
