Recording the impact of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Alnwick town Shrove Tuesday football match is an historic sporting event which has been played since the 1800's between east and west parishes of the town. It has its own traditions and rules which are still observed today.

It was originally played through the streets when shops would be boarded up but now is played on the rough pastures by the river and opposite the castle.

The youth group involved in the project will visit the museum initially and use our archived, artifacts and an old film of the match in the 1920's to research the project and their ideas. We will involve some of the older officials of the event committee to come and talk to the group at this stage. From this they will define the project and its medium and presentation.

A film maker will be engaged to work with the group at their premises to teach film techniques and digital recordings, to help them achieve their aims. A volunteer professional trainer will deliver interview training and role play sessions. The group will identify people who agree to be interviewed. The oldest person in the town who took part, people in middle age young people who played in recent years. They will record memories and discover stories e.g. who was the first woman to take part?

Shrove Tuesday 2012

They will film and photograph the event from the ball being tossed from the bailiffgate of the castle, the procession of the teams behind the piper to the field, the officials in the tent with the referees and the match. They will record comments from the participants and supporters and interview the youngest person, the retriever of the ball from the river, and the goal scorers.

Finally editing of the material, presentation of photographs and recordings onto website and dvd's for the launch event. Final body of work to be stored at the museum and in the display case for visitors and tourists to see.
